The first instalment saw the copper and Rose Leslie's character DI Kirsten Longacre investigate a fishing trawler and nuclear submarine death.

Series two, however, sees both women called up once again but this time for a new case.

Staying very much above water, they are tasked with investigating a drone attack on the RAF.

Seven soldiers were left dead after a weapon drone exercise at the Scottish military base in Dundair went terribly wrong when an unknown party took control of the object.

While viewers enjoy the new episodes, albeit with a mixed response, Vigil's boss Tom Edge has lifted the lid on a possible third series.

Speaking to Hello! Magazine, he's said he is very much open to penning another instalment.

He said: "I think we never take anything for granted in terms of actors because our actors are incredible and have so many jobs and it's a useful thought to think we have to have a shot at earning their time and their pick. That is a reasonably high bar.

"If we think about doing that, it has to feel like there's something urgent to be said, both on a character level and in terms of the domain that we may enter to unpack those questions.

"But I will say, the world does not seem short on turbulence and on questions."

All six episodes of Vigil's second series are available as a boxset on iPlayer right now.

Fans praised the finale, which got to the bottom of the MPAS drone software.

Taking to social media, one viewer said: "She's everything. Suranne Jones killed it as DCI Amy Silva in #VIGIL season 2."

A second wrote: "Thanks #Vigil! Cracking series two! When's the next one, BBC?!"

"Just finished series 2! Got to say I loved it, wish we had seen the baby at the end though. Well done all," commented a third.
