NETFLIX fans have been left ‘sobbing’ and feeling ‘claustrophobic’ after watching the streamer's newly released international disaster movie.
This year, the critically acclaimed movie Society of the Snow was shortlisted for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars.
The Spanish-language film re-tells the true story of the Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster, which led to many of the survivors turning to cannibalism to stay alive.
The synopsis reads: “In 1972, a Uruguayan flight crashes in the remote heart of the Andes, forcing survivors to become each other's best hope.”
Since Society of the Snow landed on Netflix yesterday, viewers have praised the quality of the filmmaking, while others were left in tears at the “harrowing and terrifying” recreation of events.
Taking to X(Twitter), one user tweeted: “Society of the Snow, wow! Such a raw, harsh, anxious, claustrophobic movie. I felt the need to hit the pause button multiple times just to stretch a bit and relax.”

While another viewer gave an in-depth analysis of the film: “Intense, harrowing, and often terrifying, SOCIETY OF THE SNOW is an incredible tale of survival, determination, and the human spirit.
"It’ll get more traction when it hits Netflix, but it’s worth seeing on the big screen for the production. Brutal, but life-affirming stuff.”

Created by J A Bayona, Society of Snow has earned impressive ratings from critics and viewers, with a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.9 out of 10 on IMDb.
The film is a re-creation of actual events which occurred on October 13, 1972, when a flight chartered from Uruguay to Chile crashed in the Andes with 45 passengers and crew on board.
The crash resulted in 12 deaths on impact and seven more from injuries and the freezing climate.
After just over a week, search efforts were called off, and for the next 72 days, the survivors suffered through exposure, starvation and avalanches, which resulted in the deaths of 13 more people.
The most spine-chilling fact about the event was that the ones who stayed alive resorted to cannibalism to survive.
As the remaining survivors started to see improvements in the weather, two men from the group took it upon themselves and climbed down the 15-foot mountain peak without any mountaineering gear.
The brave men hiked for 10 days across 38 miles into Chile to find help, and on December 23 1972, two months after the crash, all the remaining 16 passengers were rescued by officials.
Another Netflix film that has had horror fans terrified is The Lodge, which was released in 2019, but many claimed to have "missed" seeing it altogether until it arrived on the site.
The plot involves a future step-mum, played by Riley Keough, who gets snowed in with her fiance's two children.
Their relationship appears strained at first, but "strange and frightening events" begin to happen - and it threatens to "summon psychological demons from her strict religious childhood".
