Dermot joked that Gyles Brandreth had made it happen so they could all have a break while the films played.

He said: "Absolutely, but we got three lovely films to watch while we at it.

"It was almost like Gyles went backstage and fiddled with a couple of button's just so that we could have a nice little lay down."

Gyles replied: "You know, when I am on, my wife turns the sound down!"

Viewers were concerned about the incident, with one person writing: "What happened? Is everyone OK?"

A second wrote: "Can someone let us know everything is okay".

And a third added: "Wow what’s happened."

Alison was tipped to replace Holly Willoughby on the show, but she is said to have turned down the full down role.

A source told : "Alison has long been a favourite with bosses.

"She’s very popular with viewers and celebrities often request her when they appear on the sofa.

"She’s happy to fill in but has politely declined the job more than once."
