But today, Jon, 54, was nowhere to be seen and Sally, 52, was joined by Ben Thompson instead.

Jon's absence was not mentioned on the show, but on Sunday, he did share a snap on his Instagram Stories of his DIY skills.

The journalist posed next to his fence in the sunshine while wearing a green shirt and black gilet.

Giving the thumbs up, he wrote: "Finally, a dry day to finish painting the fence."

Before his weekend of gardening chores, Jon was suited and booted for a visit to Buckingham Palace to meet Queen Camilla.

Sharing a video to his Instagram, Jon was seen chatting to the Royal about the BBC's 500 Words competition.

He captioned the video: "Exactly one year after we relaunched #bbc500words on #bbcbreakfast it was an honour to be at Buckingham Palace for the Grand Final.

"Tens of thousands of primary school children entered the UK's biggest writing competition.

"You can find out who won - and hear their mind-blowingly brilliant stories - on a special edition of The One Show on Thursday 7 March - which happens to be World Book Day.

"What an experience for the winners to meet HM Queen Camilla at Buckingham Palace - and to hear their stories read aloud by celebrities including Oti Mabuse, Hugh Bonneville, Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Dean."

BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay warns show could 'get nasty' after epic morning disaster as Sally Nugent apologises to fans

Jon concluded: "Fab to have the kids who helped us launch the competition in Sparkbrook, Birmingham last year joining us for the final.

"It's been great to be part of this excellent pan-BBC project."

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
