And with bosses keeping the tightly-guarded script top secret until the New Year, Brenda has dropped a teaser.

During a recent event at the BFI in London to celebrate Vera's success, Brenda replied when she was asked about the finale: "No comment. I'm not going to tell you."

However, she did hint that for DI Vera Stanhope and her colleague Joe Ashworth, things are set to be rocky.

The 78-year-old explained: "I will tell you there's trouble with Detective Inspector Joe Ashworth.

"Joe has something going on that he doesn't want to talk about and Vera is anxious to get to the bottom of that.

"We know he came back to the area because his father was ill. He passed away we've already seen that. Joe doesn't seem to have come out of that dungeon and Vera's concerned about that."

Meanwhile, Vera will be left with a big decision when she hears that her boss is looking to promote her.

Brenda said: "Vera's superior, the Chief Inspector, wants to promote her, and so it's a big decision for Vera to make."

ITV previously announced a special documentary to chart the extraordinary journey of Vera and its lasting influence on British crime drama.

However, fans were left devastated as Kenny Doughty, who played DS Aiden Healy, is absent from the final series and documentary - after leaving the show 18 months ago.

The final episodes will see Vera return to her roots and embark on a personal journey, with the episodes titled Inside and The Dark Wives.

Bosses have not yet confirmed when exactly they'll air, though it's expected to be early in the New Year.
