THE VOICE UK judge Olly Murs has said that The X Factor should take a break - after not being impressed when he tuned into the show.

The 35-year-old star shot to fame on the 2009 series of the ITV talent show, where he finished second to Joe McElderry.

But now Olly believes music mogul Simon Cowell should rest the format so it can return to our screens with a bang.

Speaking to The Sun Online at the Voice UK launch, Olly pulled a face as he was asked about the show.

Joking that the ratings would have been better if Simon had "got him in as a judge", Olly continued: "I'm still on the fence on the pure basis I love the show because I came from it, so of course I want to watch it on TV.

"But at the same time, maybe the show does need a little break just for people to replenish their eyes and ears and refocus.

"The show can come back with a massive bang in a couple of years time, but that's not up to me - it's up to Simon and the X Factor to make that decision."

However, the hunk went on to insist that he is still a huge fan of the show, adding: "It's still a show I hold dear to my heart because it made me who I am."

Olly later joked that he and his girlfriend were "taking the p***" when they recently watched an unnamed show.

He told us: "I'm not going to say which, but my girlfriend was like: 'What do you think of that?'

"I was kind of taking the p***" saying: 'Close your eyes and listen' - that's what we have to do!"

Olly enjoyed a successful solo career after appearing on The X Factor, securing eight top 10 singles - four of which were Number One.

He and Caroline Flack also stepped in to replace Dermot O'Leary as host of The X Factor in 2015 having impressed on spin-off programme The Xtra Factor.
