One particularly horrifying segment showed the impact that the trial had on the Ingram family, which included eggs being thrown at their car, and being harassed in the street.

Most disturbingly, their pets were also targeted, which was highlighted in tonight's episode of the show when Diana returned home from the school run with their daughters.

She and her oldest child followed a trial of blood from the front door to the kitchen, where Charles was cradling their pet dog.

Although he insisted that the pooch will be fine, Charles was later seen burying the beloved animal after he told his daughter that the dog had been "accidentally" shot.

Viewers at home were outraged by the scenes, with several taking to social media to share their disgust as they admitted to "crying" at the shock moment.

One wrote: "Did anyone else burst into tears seeing the dog? I’m just sat here crying now because someone killed the dog."

Another added: "It’s understandable that people are mad but WHO THE HELL KILLS THE LITTLE DOG I'M GOING TO SCREAM".

A third shared: "Not gonna lie... I just shed a tear over their dog. Didn't deserve that at all."

While some fans questioned whether the sad scene had been added to the show for dramatic purposes, Charles previously opened up about the family's dog and cat being attacked due to the court case.

Speaking to BBC News in 2007, Charles said: "Our dog was kicked and punched by six youths and subsequently died.

"Our cat was shot with an air pistol."

This evening, he confirmed on Twitter that the cat, Buffy, survived the attack after an operation.
