Captain America: Civil War – what we learned from the European press conference

From actor Chris Evans' shock confession to the down-low on the all-new Spider-Man and more

THE Avengers assembled in London for the ultimate press conference ahead of the European release of Captain America: Civil War.

The plot for this new comic book-inspired sequel centres around political interference in the Avengers' activities, causing a rift between former allies Captain America and Iron Man.

New government laws being introduced to regulate superheros divide the entire team into two factions; one lead by Chris Evans’ Captain America who resists it, the other by Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man, who wants to enforce it.

In a real-life scenario, Chris Evans would side with Iron Man

Shocker! The 34-year-old explained: You have to answer to somebody. You couldn't just let this group of vigilantes answer to yourself."

If Robert Downey Jr. could trade super powers with another Avenger it would be...

“Switching powers I’d choose Vision but not the makeup. The ability alone, you can’t top that.”

Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner meanwhile opted for Spider-Man.

Spider-Man is “something else”

This latest Marvel instalment finally brings Spider-Man into the fold.

Robert Downey Jr. was full of praise for the new recruit who is now played by 19-year-old British actor Tom Holland.

“He came on with a bang. There’s a lot of excitement about seeing what’ll happen.”

Filmmaker brothers Anthony and Joe Russo were equally complimentary.

Describing Iron Man’s reaction to the new arrival, they said: He believes that he's taking with him perhaps one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe.

"It's like a new anyone - I think [Tom] really came on with a bang. There's a lot of excitement about seeing what will happen."

And more Spidey is definitely on the way

Earlier this month it was revealed that an all new web-slinging adventure is on the cards.

Tom Holland surprised attendees at CinemaCon in Las Vegas by turning up to make the announcement in person.

Spider-Man Homecoming will be directed by newcomer Jon Watts and written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein who was behind hit comedy Horrible Bosses.

It’s currently scheduled for release on July 28 2017 in the UK.

Emily Olsen has a potty mouth

Asked if the largely male cast were careful to watch their language around her and Emily VanCamp, she replied: “No, I’m still trying to watch my language when I’m around them!”

Emily VanCamp “gets” that Sharon Carter and Steve Rogers’ romance is “weird”

After all, her aunt was originally his love interest during World War II...

She mused: “In the comic books they went on to have an interesting and complicated love affair so that was something I loved when I was doing the research for Sharon.

“I don’t know how far we’ll go with that, we’ll see I suppose. It helps that it’s the GREAT aunt, so there’s at least one generation in-between.

“I get it, some people think it’s a little weird.”

Despite his dad playing Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr.’s son is a Captain America fan

He lamented: “When my son started wearing entirely Captain America PJS and hats and everything, I felt a natural resentment.

“But being a consummate professional I didn’t bring it into the work place,” he quickly added laughing.
