VIEWERS of The Voice were left ‘fuming’ on Saturday night as they got to see the new “block” button in action as Olly Murs prevented fellow judge Tom Jones from picking one of the acts.

Although the rules weren’t explained completely, it appears each judge has the opportunity to block one of their fellow judges from being a potential option to an act each week.

During Saturday’s episode of The Voice, judges Anne-Marie, Sir Tom Jones, Will.I.Am and Olly Murs tried to clarify exactly how the “block” button worked.

Showing the buttons to the camera, viewers could see the judges had three extra buzzers they could press – each titled with a competitor’s name.

Will, 45, explained that last week he had blocked Olly, 36, from being able to pick Jeremy Levif.

Despite them both turning around for the artist during the blind audition, Will took a particular liking to Jeremy and pressed his buzzer to stop Olly from being in the running.

During Saturday’s performance, Olly and Tom, 80, both turned for Joe Topping who sang Forever Young by Alphaville, and sensing that the talent might choose the musical legend, the former X-Factor star used his block button to keep him out of the running.

Many fans were left deeply unimpressed by this move and with the block buttons in general.

One wrote: “I hate the block button, so unfair on the artists”

“The ‘block’ thing is rubbish and unnecessary,” ranted another.

While a third commented: “This block button is stupid. I would be fuming if I was denied Tom Jones.”

“You know the block is a confusing crap idea when they have to talk about it constantly in the hope we ‘get it’,” added a fourth.

Speaking to Radio Times, host Emma Willis revealed the new button had made the judges “bloody naughty”.

She said: “Anne-Marie is a naughty little minx, which we absolutely have embraced and love. She keeps up with all of the boys, which is brilliant.

“But it just creates pure naughtiness in all of them because they’re like little kids playing pranks on each other, which is brilliant,” she added.

Emma went on: “And Tom finds it really funny, he just kind of sits there giggling to himself.

“So it’s been really nice actually. It’s kind of always nice to introduce something new, especially when it’s a bit of a wind-up to someone else.”
