JEREMY Clarkson has sent Twitter wild with a hilarious post about the new PM and Chancellor.

Theresa May took the helm today after David Cameron stepped down as Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party following the Brexit referendum.

And it was announced this evening that George Osborne had also resigned from the front benches – with Philip Hammond set to take over as Chancellor.

But witty Clarkson picked up on the names of the pair now filling the top two roles in the Government.

He tweeted: “Oh for f***'s sake. May and Hammond? Really? We will end up thick and lost.”

The ex-Top Gear presenter couldn’t help but seize the opportunity to take a cheeky dig at his former co-hosts on the BBC driving show, James May and Richard Hammond.

And he is also known to be close to the outgoing PM – who posed as the Stig in a video message for Clarkson's 50th birthday in 2010.

Cameron also backed his "friend" when he was involved in a fracas with a Top Gear producer that ultimately led to him leaving the show.

Clarkson's followers seemed to relish the message, with many chiming in with jibes of their own.

“At least with May wherever we end up we won’t get there fast,” said one, making reference to the presenter’s slow and steady approach to races on the old Top Gear programme.

Another asked: “Will James announce you as Foreign Secretary in the coming days?”

And @billtrentcfa quipped: “Tonight - May gets lost on the way out of Europe, Hammond finds loose change under the seats, and I drive the new Maclaren.”

One social media commentator even suggested the pair swap roles with the new Chancellor and PM for Clarkson’s new show on Amazon.

@lxthrdg tweeted: “I spy a potentially interesting new job-swap feature for your new show.”

The Grand Tour is due to come out this autumn, with 12 episodes being released online at a rate of one per week.

Fans of the original Top Gear cast have eagerly awaited the release of the programme – especially after Chris Evans sensationally left the new look BBC show after just one season.

After being slammed for his lacklustre performances throughout the series, Evans finally walked away a little over a week ago after claiming he had given it his “best shot”.
