After being sentenced to five years in April 2010, he pleaded guilty to smuggling drugs into prison in 2011.

He is now in a halfway house after he was released.

reported he is planning to write a memoir.

A source told the column:  "Cameron will talk about his struggle being the son and grandson of Hollywood icons, and then his bad decisions which led him to jail, and then solitary confinement.

"He is staying low-key after his release and plans to spend time with his father and mother.

"He believes this is a new start, and a chance at a new life."

The son of the Oscar-winning actor started using drugs when he was 13 according to Dan Abrahamson, the director of legal affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance.

Abrahamson said in 2012 that Cameron had "misused drugs since at least age 13, began using heroin at age 20 and by age 25 was opioid- dependent."

He wrote in the Brief of Amici which was filed in relation to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit after Cameron was convicted of unlawfully possessing the painkiller Suboxone and heroin while in prison.

He added Cameron had "ingested heroin five to six times a day in the five years prior to his arrest and was under the influence of heroin at the time of his arrest.'

It was his addiction which led to his extended sentence - he was originally under house arrest while waiting for his trial in 2009 - but his girlfriend Kelly Scott tried to get heroin to him on a toothbrush.

Cameron was then put in prison - but his lawyer Jennifer Riddha was busted by federal agents after supplying him with Xanax.

She escaped jail, but he had his sentence extended and had to spend nearly two years in solitary confinement.

It was reported at the time the length of time was seen as one of the longest ever for a prisoner who was in jail for a straight forward drug possession.

But Judge Berman said Cameron had been "continuously reckless, disruptive, and non-compliant."

Cameron was set to be eligible for parole in 2018 - it was then moved to 2017 when he was transferred from a medium-security Maryland prison to Danbury Correctional Facility in Connecticut, which is low security, last December.

His father Michael spoke out about his feelings when he got an Emmy award for his portrayal of Liberace in Behind the Candelabra in 2013.

He said: "I’m questioning the system.

"At first I was certainly disappointed with my son, but I’ve reached a point now where I’m disappointed with the system."

Cameron is the son of Michael and his first wife Diandra - the acclaimed actor then went on to tie the knot with Catherine Zeta Jones - they have two children together - Carys and Dylan.
