EastEnders fan Gemma H wrote: “@bbceastenders total F*** UP!!!!!!! well done Eastenders!!!! Really really not happy with the outcome of this one.”

Another fan raged: “#EastEnders keeping it real. So basically, don't bother reporting rape, coz it'll be a complete waste of time. #slowclaps.”

One user tweeted: “#EastEnders was so hard to watch tonight.”

A distressed viewer found the scenes so discomforting they were forced to switch the programme off.

They tweeted: “Physically #sick at watching #EastEnders tnight. had end up switching it off... What a mess I'm in!!”

Although the verdict may come as a shock to viewers, the outcome is reflective of recent statistics published by Rape Crisis, who worked with the soap on the story line.

The charity revealed that only 5.7% of reported rape cases end in a conviction for the perpetrator.

Rebecca Hitchen, who's Operations Coordinator at Rape Crisis London, spoke to about the upsetting story line.

She revealed: “We may be angry and frustrated by the fact that Dean does not get the comeuppance he deserves and be shocked that he has got away with his crimes again.

“It is an important reality to face that far too often rapists are not convicted and justice is not realised. This is why additional support, and other ways to have their voices heard, are so crucial for survivors.
