He has enough on his plate juggling two pregnant women, but Steve has another drama to deal with when he receives a call from his dad Jim – who reveals he’s got myotonic dystrophy (MD), a serious condition that causes muscle wasting.
As it’s hereditary, there is a chance Steve has it too.
Both he and Michelle are terrified that, if he does, he may have passed it on to their baby.
Of course, Leanne is also pregnant with Steve’s child, adding a whole extra layer of worry for the dad-to-be.
"As usual, Steve reacts oddly,” says Simon Gregson of his character’s reaction to Jim’s news.
“He doesn’t want to have the test – I think he’s frightened of what they might say.”
That decision is taken out of his hands when an unwitting Michelle confides in a shocked Leanne that there’s a 50/50 chance Steve has MD.
Summoning Steve round to their apartment, Nick and Leanne pile the pressure on him to take the test.
“Steve just loses it,” explains Simon. “He’s been under so much pressure that he just snaps.”
Undeterred by Steve’s reluctance to take the test, Leanne hatches a plot to make sure he gets tested.
“Leanne’s plan is to ensure Tracy finds out,” adds Simon.
“Tracy will go in all guns blazing and try to force Steve to have the test, because she’ll want to know about Amy’s chances.”
Will Steve take the test? And will the results confirm his worst fears?
DAVID’s DESPERATE PLAN
He may have been foiled in his attempt to suffocate Macca by a pesky nurse, but David is more hellbent on revenge than ever.
Abandoning a client halfway through an appointment, he dashes to the court where Clayton is due to appear.
As he watches a prison van pull up, the cogs in his head begin to turn and a dark new idea forms.
Gail is suspicious of her son’s behaviour, but nothing can derail David from his mission as he spends hours finessing his plans, before buying a car from the lads at the garage.
After an incident with Max at school and a dressing-down from his mum, it’s clear that David is teetering on the edge of despair as he makes his final, crucial preparations.
When he takes off for a spin in his new car with the kids, Gail makes a horrifying discovery on David’s computer – and the true nature of what he has up his sleeve comes to light…
SARAH DUMPS GARY
Just when Sarah finally has something to smile about with Gary, the rug is pulled out from underneath her when she comes across Bethany’s secret stash of diet pills.
And things go from bad to worse when she confronts her daughter about the tablets and Bethany admits Gary warned her off taking them.
Fuming that her new love interest knew all about her child’s unhealthy habit and didn’t tell her, Sarah takes her frustrations out on Gary in the street.
He insists he was just trying to help, but Sarah makes her fury quite clear and, following her explosion, gives him the cold shoulder.
But while the romance seems to be over before it has even begun, hope comes from an unlikely corner when Izzy gets wind of the situation.
She tries to convince Sarah that Gary only ever had Bethany’s best interests at heart – will her words persuade Sarah to give Gary another chance?
