I grew up in a council house – I never knew I could be a comedian until I was told I was funny, says Russell Kane

RUSSELL Kane never knew he could be a comedian until a colleague told him that he was funny.

The funnyman, 47, has opened up about how he's got into the industry after shooting to fame in 2004.

Over the years Russell has been nominated and won numerous comedy awards, including Best Comedy show at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards in 2010.

The star has also appeared on various comedy TV shows to share his views, including Britain Unzipped, Big Brother's Big Mouth and Geordie Shore: The Reunion.

Despite being extremely successful, the telly favourite didn't have comedy mapped out in his future when he was younger.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun, Russell said: "I never planned my comedy career no. Theatre isn’t at the forefront of your mind when you grow up in a council house.

"When I first got my first writing job as a copywriter someone said ‘you’re so funny’ which was something I’d been told my whole life but no one ever said to do anything with it.

"I thought it wasn’t a transferable skill to be funny but turns out it is."

Russell recalled the moment that his life changed forever.

He continued: "I was sat in an office and I was sat at my copywriting desk and a colleague said ‘please just try comedy Russell you’ll be f***** ace at it I know it.

"So I googled stand up comedy and clicked the first linked and phoned the first number and asked how it worked.

"It was as simple as that.

"There was a three week wait and you go to amateur night and have a five minute slot.

"I had never been to see live stand up at this point, so in the three weeks that I was waiting I went to watch some and thought ‘I think I’m funny as some of these.’ The rest is history. I was nervous.

"I was extra in Grange Hill and did a bit part in The Bill, so I’d always been a show off and I suppose there were some signs there if you look back.

"I’ve never written a routine or typed out stand up in my life. Something funny will happy and I’ll remember it and just take it for my set."

Russell's personal life is just as successful as his career.

The star tied the knot with his wife Lindsey in 2014 after meeting her at one of his shows.

They share a daughter called Mia.

Russell also told The Sun that there is no lack of spark whatsoever in his marriage.

“I think my wife would like a little less spark. I have an unusual amount of energy. I think she probably hoped by dating an older man she’d be bothered less than she is," he said.

The pair can't keep their hands off each other after nine years of marriage.

He continued: “I’m hornier than a rhino, only for her obviously. We’re just really into each other and we go out a lot and it makes people want to throw up when we’re all over each other.

“We’ve been married nine years in May. I’d never been single before and couldn’t get a kiss. I left school without kissing a girl. I’m 5ft10 and talk a lot. I was so bad at being single.”
