TRAILER PARKED

Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson star in Martin Scorsese’s Silence, here we take a look at the trailer

ONE of the most-anticipated movies of the New Year is very nearly here.

We take a look at the trailer to see what Scorsese has up his sleeve for the upcoming film, Silence...

What’s this? A new Scorsese film, you say? Excellent! Gangsters, lowlifes and bad deeds on the gritty streets of New York, right? Er, maybe not, judging from the first frames of the trailer.

8

OK, a bit of plot. It seems Father Ferreira has gone missing. And nice young priest Andrew Garfield out of Spider-Man is looking for him. In 17th-century Japan. Exciting!

“The moment you set foot in that country, you step into high danger,” warns Spider-Man’s boss, who may be the Pope. The reasons for this aren’t immediately clear…

8

Doesn’t look dangerous so far. Here’s Spider-Man and some peasants and they all look pretty chilled. Though some dramatic music has just kicked in, so perhaps all is not as it seems.

8

Oh, hang on. Here we go. Some Samurai types have just ridden into town and suddenly we’ve got people being rounded up and beaten and suchlike. Doesn’t look good for this old boy.

8

“The price for your glory is their suffering,” says head Samurai to Spider-Man. And we’re shown just how much they’re going to suffer. It seems crucifixions are standard in 17th-century Japan.

8

Whoa. Hold the wedding! Liam Neeson’s just popped up. Ah, it seems he’s Father Ferreira! Great! So now they’ve found him they can all go home in peace, right?

8

Maybe not. The final 30 seconds are mostly Spider-Man getting battered, while Liam looks on menacingly. What’s going on? We’re thinking Apocalypse Now, with added God. Different, then.
