Sherlock season four spoilers: Amanda Abbington reveals secrets of the Christmas specials

The actress spilled all the secrets for the new series

SHERLOCK star Amanda Abbington has teased the show's return.

The actress - who plays super spy Mary Watson in the BBC adaptation series - will return in the new series with a brand new baby with her character but unfortunately the child actors hired for the show didn't like her very much.

“I can’t tell you much, because there are people watching me," she said, teasing the show on This Morning.

“But there were many babies, and the one playing Rosamund Mary projectile vomited on me. I was bouncing her too much, and then it happened. I had to go, 'Thank you very much’, and hand her back!'

“In one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original books, there was a bloodhound.

“So Steven [Moffatt, showrunner] thought it would be a good idea to get a real one, and it really wasn’t. It was terrible.

“He looked great but if you asked him to do anything, he was like ‘Nope’ and just sat there.

“We were filming in Borough Market, with loads of people watching. I was having to film with Dexter, and I was pulling him so much I fell over.

“One of the props boys had to be a stand-in and then I got pulled around by a props boy!”

Fans already knew about the Watsons' upcoming arrival, and guessed it was a baby girl after a promotional photo saw Sherlock wrinkling his nose up at the pink onesie wearing tot strapped to her dad's chest in a carrier.

Benedict Cumberbatch is back in the deer stalker and trench coat for what promises to be the most intense series yet.

The show is set to return on New Year’s Day with an episode titled The Six Thatchers, which will be part of a three-episode run.

Rumours also suggest that a third Holmes brother — Sherrinford — might pay a visit to Baker Street in the new series, and Benedict Cumberbatch has previously joked that he would like Tom Hiddleston in the role.

Toby Jones takes the helm as this series’ bad guy in the shape of Culverton Smith – and his sadistic laugh is set to send chills down your spine as his plans come together.

Due to the overwhelming success of lead actors Benedict and Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson, many believe that this series of the BBC show will be the last – as the demand for the duo makes it almost impossible to have them together.

Filming on the new series began in April this year having been pushed back almost six months due to the cast’s busy schedules.

During an interview with GQ this year, Benedict admitted that this series felt like “the end of an era” and said: “I’d love to revisit it, I’d love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we’ve made something very complete as it is, so I think we’ll just wait and see. The idea of never playing (Sherlock) again is really galling.”

  • Sherlock's fourth season airs on New Year's Day at 8.30pm on BBC One
