Paul Weller makes surprise cameo appearance in Sherlock finale thanks to pal Martin Freeman
The Jam star, 58, was dressed as a viking in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene

SHERLOCK fans had to be top sleuths to spot rock star Paul Weller in the finale.
The Jam star, 58, was dressed as a viking in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it scene during a montage at the end of the episode.
Viewers had no idea the singer, who is a close friend of the show’s star Martin Freeman, was the man in the costume.
At a preview screening last week director Benjamin Caron, 40, admitted there as a surprise cameo in the scene but did not reveal who from.
He said: “We were a little bit behind. We had a viking who was a special person, Benedict was sweating and saying Sherlock doesn’t sweat because he’s a lizard. The baby was crying. It was a complicated moment that came together in five minutes on a baking hot set.”
A BBC source revealed: “The viking lying on the floor in the final scenes is in fact Paul Weller.
“He is a good friend of Martin Freeman’s. Viewers will never have been able to clock him in the costume as the scene is over so fast.”
Sunday’s Sherlock finale poured doubts on the future of the show after ending with a firm conclusion for the first time ever.
RELATED STORIES
Previous series of the detective drama, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, 40, and Martin Freeman, 45, normally end with a cliff-hanger but Sunday’s finale suggests a fifth series will not follow.
In a new chat, co-creator Steven Moffatt, 55, could not confirm whether another series was on the cards.
Asked whether it would be the last episode, he replied: “We’re not planning it to be, but it might be.
“It’s possible and we could end it there. We couldn’t have ended it on any of the previous series because they all ended on walloping great cliff hangers.”
His fellow show boss Mark Gattiss, 50, added: “We absolutely don’t know. It’s up to all sorts of factors. Scheduling. Willingness to do it is all here but we’re just not sure.”
Various stories were wrapped up during the episode.
Villain Jim Moriarty’s death was finally confirmed after the dramatic reappearance of the character, played by Andrew Scott, 40, was restricted to a flashback.
Meanwhile Sherrinford was unveiled as the facility in which Sherlock’s sister Eurus, played by Sian Brooke, 36, had been kept, as opposed to a person.
Perverse scenes in which Doctor John Watson found a toddler’s skull and bones uncovered the truth that Eurus had killed Sherlock’s childhood friend Victor Trevor.
Sherlock won the festive ratings battle with consolidated viewing figures of 11.3million.
