Oliver Stanley Murs was born on May 14, 1984, in Witham, Essex, to Vicky-Lynn and Pete Murs.

He has a twin brother named Ben and a sister called Fay.

Olly was educated in Braintree and played for the school football team and then played semi-professionally for Witham Town from 2006 to 2008 before an injury forced him to retire.

He later worked for a local recruitment consultancy and used to perform in a cover band called Small Town Blaggers with his friend Jon Goodey.

Route to stardom

Olly got his big break when he auditioned for The X Factor.

He wowed the judges with his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition.

Olly had previously tried to make it on the show twice but failed to get through to the audition stage.

He progressed to the final during which he duetted with his idol Robbie Williams – who fluffed his lines as he came on stage but recovered with Olly’s help.

Olly lost the coveted X Factor crown to Joe McElderry but signed a joint contract with Epic Records and Syco Music and released his debut single Please Don’t Let Me Go in August 2010.

It went straight to the top of the singles chart and he's been on the up ever since.

Olly has gone on to record and release four more albums, all of which have gone platinum and straight to the top of the album chart.

Taking over TV

Olly has also turned his hand to presenting, which was kick-started when he sat in for Comedy Dave Vitty on the Chris Moyles Show on Radio 1 for a week.

He then co-hosted the eighth and ninth series of the Xtra Factor with the late Caroline Flack before they took over from Dermot O’Leary to present the twelfth series of the main show.

Both he and Caroline quit at the end of the run.

From 2018 until 2023, Olly was a coach on ITV's The Voice.
