Introducing the teaser at the end of Saturday night’s semi-final, Tom Jones tells the audience: “Things are about to get tough.”

Wannabe stars on the show are then seen singing their hearts out as they go up against in each to stay in the competition.

One young singer cannot control his tears and he starts to cry uncontrollably on stage.

Another begs to be given a chance, telling Tom and his fellow coaches Will.I.Am, Jennifer Hudson and Gavin Rossdale: “I would one hundred per cent put everything into my performance.”

During Saturday night's semi final, fans of the show were up in arms when former Hollyoaks actress Abi Phillips failed to make it to the battle rounds.

Some voiced their anger on Twitter, with one writing: “The judges were silly for not turning!”

Another tweeted: “She was great, I can’t believe they didn’t turn.”

After her performance Jennifer hinted she wished she’d pressed her buzzer to get the actress through to the next stage.

Her co-star Gavin wasn’t so sure however, telling Tom: “I loved the song but we need the next level.”

Abi’s family and friends looked gutted as she turned and walked away.

Speaking afterwards, a despondent Abi said: “I did the best I could and I’m proud but that’s just the way it is.”

Abi, 22, played Liberty Savage on the Channel 4 soap for more two years up until 2013 – but always had ambitions to make it in music.

Speaking ahead of her performance, Abi said: “I really enjoyed Hollyoaks and really did appreciate it but I didn’t love it as much as my music.

“And I kind of felt like it was time to try and do the thing I really love doing.

“I’ve been working so hard to do my music for such a long time.

“I’d really love to prove to myself that I was right to follow my heart and do something I love and leave acting behind.

“I just really hope that that was the right choice.”

Abi originally won her Hollyoaks role by writing a song called Missing You – which was played when Carley Stenson’s character Steph Cunningham died in a house fire.

Speaking about the soap, she added: “One day I was doing my GCSEs and the next I’m on Hollyoaks – I just wasn’t expecting it at all.”
