STAR Wars fans were left waving their lightsabers in the air with delight after seeing the first trailer from The Last Jedi at the Star Wars Celebration event  in Orlando.

Beginning where Episode VII: The Force Awakens left off, Rey (Daisy Ridley) could be seen struggling to breathe as Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) calmly told her to breathe. He added: "Reach out. Now what do you see?"

To which Daisy replied: "Light. Darkness. A balance."

She could be seen practising with her lightsaber under Luke's watchful eye, while John Boyega's Finn featured briefly and there was a fierce intergalactic battle to whet the appetite of the Star Wars faithful.

The Millenium Falcon returns, flying better than ever, while the villainous Kylo Ren appears completely lost to the Dark Side as he fires up his red lightsaber.

Robots BB-8 and R2-D2 are once more in the thick of the action as they try and avoid being reduced to scrap.

Somewhat menacingly, Skywalker says: "I only know one truth. It's time for the Jedi to end."

The trailer faded into darkness and as the lights in the auditorium rose, the crowd erupted into cheers.

It was the first time the film's stars had seen the teaser, with the full film dropping around Christmas 2017.

Unsurprisingly, fans across the Twitterverse couldn't contain their excitement.

One enthused: "The Star Wars ep 8 teaser looked so good omg"

While another said: "The first trailer for Star Wars The Last Jedi looks epic"

As a third was left craving more after saying the trailer left them "shook".

The first official trailer comes after journalist Daniel Miller of the Los Angeles Times described a brief clip he had seen at Disney’s annual shareholders meeting in Denver last month.

He said: “We just saw more Star Wars: The Last Jedi footage. In it, Luke asks Rey, ‘Who are you?’ Then we see her deftly handle a lightsaber.”

Miller added: “Also making appearances in The Last Jedi footage: Chewbacca, General Leia Organa and Finn.

“General Leia Organa was on screen for just a second in military garb and didn’t speak.”

He concluded: “One last thing on the Last Jedi footage: We saw all sorts of settings — mountains, oceans, forests, deserts. Look suitably epic, exotic.

“We saw a shot of an X-wing wobbling mid-air, under attack inside a giant ship. Looked like a wounded bird.”

Miller finally added: “In the clip, a character yelled ‘It’s now or never!’ Sorry to say I couldn’t tell you who screamed it!”

It comes after actor Mark Hamill blew the lid on the plot of the next blockbuster in a rare interview with students at Oxford University.

The actor gave the biggest hint yet that he is the father of Rey when he said: “Daisy is incredible, so genuine, appealing, loveable, she beams, she has a wonderful charisma, I adore her. She’s my daughter’s age – and that’s how I relate to her.”
