REDWATER and EastEnders have committed an almighty gaffe by getting the date wrong by two years.

The BBC drama and the original soap didn't seem to understand the year, with three years being mentioned in two shows about the same event.

Kat and Alfie Moon's spin-off began with a flashback to 1994 before fast-forwarding "21 years later" which would, by the usual laws of mathematics and time, make it 2015.

However, it is 2017, and on Tuesday's episode of EastEnders, Stacey Fowler received a postcard from Kat telling her she was going to Ireland which would mean Redwater is set now.

"This is from Kat, her and Alfie are going to Ireland now," Stacey said in the episode.

The clanger, which by Redwater time, would mean Kat and Alfie exist two years behind actual time, confused viewers no end, especially as the couple didn't actually leave Walford until 2016.

They flocked to social media to express their displeasure and wonder if the pair had accidentally joined Doctor Who instead.

"Wait. First scene was 1994. Then we jump 21 years later. That would be 2015. But Kat and Alfie left the square in January 2016?" wrote one viewer.

Another added: "So Redwater is set in 2015? Kat and Alfie left the square in January 2016 so there's an error already."

"So Redwater is set in 2015, yes?" asked another, adding: "So why did Stacey get a postcard only yesterday saying Kat & Alfie are going to Ireland?? #EastEnders."

However, that wasn't the only problem with the timeline.

Other fans pointed out that while the show said Kat had received a postcard from December 1983 saying her son, Zoe's twin brother, was doing well, he actually wasn't born then.

Instead he was born in February 1984.

"Love Redwater already," wrote one viewer. "But can't help noticing mistakes, why are they saying Kat's son was born in 1983?"

Another added: "So Zoe's twin brother was safely in Redwater by December 1983 and yet she wasn't both until 1st February 1984 - hello continuity! #Redwater"

The spin-off, which has received mixed reviews from fans, suffered a setback earlier this week when it aired in Ireland before the UK and a major plot point leaked.

The identity of Kat's son was revealed as Priest Dermot, before a bombshell twist saw him murder the man who told him about his birth mother.
