What is Strike: The Cuckoo's Calling?

The adaptation of JK Rowling's first Strike book, The Cuckoo's Calling, premiered on Sunday August 27 at 9.00pm on BBC1.

The second episode airs the following night at the same time, with the third and final part of the story broadcast on Sunday September 3.

The books follow the cases undertaken by private investigator Cormoran Strike and his assistant and secretary, Robin Ellacott.

Cormoran is in his late thirties, the illegitimate son of a former rock star and a former Special Investigation Branch investigator who was discharged from the army after losing half his leg in a bomb attack in Afghanistan.

In The Cuckoo's Calling, Cormoran is hired by the brother of a troubled model Lula Landry, who has fallen to her death from a balcony in an exclusive area of London.

While it's presumed by most that the model took her own life, her brother isn't sure, and seeks Cormoran's help in finding out what really happened.

Where was Strike: The Cuckoo's Calling filmed? Where did they shoot the other two parts?

Filming for the adaptation of the first book took place in London in November 2016 and continued until April.

Many Londoners will be able to recognise scenes from the three-part show, and some sets were created further afield in Kent.

Here are some of the spots you should look out for:

The Tottenham pub

The watering hole that inspired the book is located right in the heart of the action on Oxford Street.

The Tottenham used to be situated at number 6 on the famous road, but has since been renamed to be the Flying Horse.

Crew headed to the surrounding areas around the BT Tower in Fitzrovia to create the location, with the Duke of York pub standing in for the Tottenham during filming.

Denmark Street

Private-eye Cormoran Strike, who has a prosthetic leg and wears a distinctive dark coat, lives at his office at 6 Denmark Street.

For exterior shots of the space, it wasn’t easy, as crew had to get permits to clear and film in the busy area.

Interior shots were filmed in a sound stage in West London.

Producer Jackie Larkin said it was quite a mission to shoot the scenes of model Lula’s apartment.

In the end, crew had to film at five different locations to capture the pool, staircase and interior shots.
