Gwyneth Paltrow says ex husband Chris Martin is ‘like a brother’ and jokes that’s why they got divorced
GWYNETH Paltrow has said her ex-husband Chris Martin is now "like a brother" to her.
The 45-year-old actress - who "consciously uncoupled" from the Coldplay star in March 2014 - revealed the pair have adopted a "familial" relationship during her appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night.
The shock comment came after the host congratulated the Iron Man star on her recent engagement to TV producer Brad Falchuk.
Referencing a picture Gwyneth shared of her husband-to-be sitting alongside her ex-husband over brunch, Stephen noted how the former flames have remained incredibly close.
"Very much so," she affirmed. "He's like my brother. Very familial. It's nice. Great."
The comedian then joked that it was a little odd for the Oscar-winning star to have had kids with someone who is "like a brother".
But Gwyneth had the perfect comeback, quipping: "Which would explain the divorce. Just kidding."
Despite her lighthearted approach to the topic, the Goop founder - who has children Apple, 13, and Moses, 11, with the British rocker - soon lamented their "painful" break-up.
Asked if their decision to "consciously uncouple" meant they were "more evolved" than everybody else, she responded: "Definitely not... divorce is terrible.
"It was very painful and really hard. We genuinely wanted our kids to be as unscathed as possible."

The blonde added: "We thought if we could really maintain the family even though we weren’t a couple that was kind of the goal so that’s what we’ve tried to do."
Gwyneth and Chris finalised their divorce in April 2015 after 10 years of marriage.
Since their split, the Fix You hitmaker has been linked to some of the world's most beautiful women, including The Hunger Games' Jennifer Lawrence and Peaky Blinders' Annabelle Wallis.
It's believed Chris is currently in a relationship with Fifty Shades star Dakota Johnson.
