Even if your cooking skills don’t go much further than putting a frozen lasagne in the microwave, this six-part display of culinary expertise is a treat.

Mary Berry (right) is on form as she celebrates the joys of home cooking.

First up is the brunch classic eggs Florentine.

Mary doesn’t wear an apron while she’s frying the bacon, yet her lovely striped top emerges unscathed.

Tonight’s guest is Swedish chef Niklas Esktedt (left), who introduces her to cave-man cooking – while he chops some wood, Mary starts a fire.

You’ll be drooling over their venison meatballs with blackened celeriac and Swedish doughnuts. Ultimate comfort TV.

Within a few seconds of the introduction, you can tell this is going to be a great series.

There’s incredible-looking food, a contestant in despair and Gregg Wallace (right) dressed up as an RAF pilot.

And we begin at a smart pace, with Gregg singing rugby songs while seven contestants try to be the three to reach Friday’s quarter-final.

The series of Philip K Dick sci-fi adaptations returns with an edgy drama about 10-year-old boy Charlie, who realises that his dad (Greg Kinnear, above) has completely changed.

It becomes apparent to him that aliens are taking over people’s bodies, but is there anything he can do? Superior, thought-provoking stuff.

Marcella (Anna Friel, right) decides she has to get to the bottom of her blackouts and investigate the origin of the “fugue” states, which began after her daughter’s cot death.

But the case of the dead schoolboy leaves her little chance for reflection, as there are twists and turns which leave Marcella and her team feeling bewildered. Complex, tense and increasingly hard to turn away from.

Hooked is an understatement.
