PIERS Morgan hit out at Gary Oldman today for ignoring Britain in his acceptance speech for his Best Actor Oscar.
The South Londoner, 59, emotionally thanked his wife and children – who are all American – as he picked up the gong for playing Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour, but Piers feels the UK didn’t get enough of a nod.
He said on Good Morning Britain: “It was interesting, we call Gary Oldman a British winner, but he just made a big speech about America.
“I was waiting for him and thinking, ‘Come on mate, you’re playing Sir Winston Churchill, at least give us a scrap. He mentioned South London, but he didn’t grab the British thing.
“He basically stood there and was like, ‘I’m so grateful to America.’”
The irritated presenter went on to remind Gary of his roots.
He said: “Wait, it was this country that empowered you, Gary Oldman. You’re playing one of the great British leaders of history.”
Susanna Reid joked: "Are you accusing him of being a traitor?”
Piers replied: “No, please! Stop putting words into my mouth."
“I think Gary Oldman is a very brilliant actor, but you should never forget your roots. When you’re there you’re there for Great Britain.”
Last night the actor said: "I’ve lived in America for the longest time and I'm deeply grateful to the loves and the friendships I have made and the wonderful gifts it has given me.
"My home, my livelihood, my family and now Oscar. The movies, such is their power, captivated a young man from south London and gave him a dream and Douglas Urbanski, my dear brother, you have helped keep the dream alive.
"Thank you everyone at working title and Universal Focus for your herculean efforts and support.
"I would just like to salute Sir Winston Churchill who has been marvellous company in what can be described as a fantastic journey."

However, he did give a nod to his mum in the UK.
He continued: "I would like to thank my mother who is older than the Oscar – she is 99 years young next birthday and she is watching the ceremony from the comfort of her sofa.
"I want to say thank you my mother for your love and support, and get the kettle on. I’m bringing Oscar."
