“You are travelling around, you live in a suitcase, you get to this place, there's free alcohol everywhere—it's sort of weird if you don't drink,” he said in the 2013 article.

He added that he drank champagne at night, Bloody Marys at the airport, wine on the plane, ‘on repeat’.

“I was so nervous,” he told the reporter about his early career.

“I just got into a habit, because you rely on that encouragement and self-confidence you get from alcohol, and then you get dependent on it.”

Avicii claimed that after suffering from “a searing pain” in his abdomen and spending eleven days in a New York hospital, he cut back on drinking – but added "I probably drink more now than I should, but I have a pace. I never drink two days in a row."

But during the interview, he downed shots, drank champagne and even showed off the special hand gesture that would signal to his team he wanted to be passed another drink behind the decks – curling his hand into the shape of the letter C.

The journalist also observes that due to his hectic lifestyle, Avicii was “subsisting on a diet of Red Bull, nicotine, and airport food”.

The DJ passed away at just age 28 in Muscat, Oman, last Friday.
