Rita revealed the track Girls is inspired by her own experience of being bisexual.
The single received criticism from fans and other artists for being 'tone deaf' and exploiting the LGBTQ+ community.
The singer responded by tweeting a statement which said: "Girls was written to represent my truth and is an accurate account of a very real and honest experience in my life.
"I have had romantic relationships with women and men throughout my life and this is my personal journey."
What was her song Girls about?
Rita enlists chart toppers Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX for the track aimed at projecting female empowerment while discussing themes of self-love and bisexuality.
As well as taking inspiration from her own experiences, Rita said she was inspired by Katy Perry and her hit song I Kissed A Girl.
It's been speculated that the song was penned about her relationship with model Cara Delevingne after she openly spoke of the actress as her muse while in the studio recording it.
A source said: “She has been honest with pals about what went on with her and Cara and she was happy to discuss the model being the main influence behind the track.”

What has James Arthur said about the claims?
On May 30, 2018, James Arthur exclusively told The Sun that he isn't surprised Rita is bisexual because he 'assumed everyone is'.
James, who dated Rita after winning The X Factor in 2012, revealed: “I respect people shedding light and standing up for the LGBT community — that’s a great thing.
“If that’s what it is, you know, and not an attempt for publicity, then fair play. I kind of assumed everyone is bisexual these days. I think most girls I know fancy other girls, it’s not something unusual in 2018.
“So Rita saying I kissed a girl doesn’t make me step back in amazement. It doesn’t shock. Each to their own, that’s great.”
