Tom Daley hits back at people who criticised him and husband Dustin Lance Black for using a surrogate
OLYMPIC diver Tom Daley has hit out at those who would question why he and husband Dustin Lance Black opted to have a biological child instead of adopting.
The 24-year-old sportsman and his 44-year-old Oscar winning husband became first time parents to a son named Robert in June.
And while the pair are thrilled to be the proud fathers to their healthy young boy, they are far less thrilled to have people critique their family choices.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Tom hinted that he and Lance are frequently challenged over their decision to welcome a child via a surrogate rather than adopt.
And by all accounts it sounds like the pair are greatly insulted by the question – with Tom going as far as suggesting this borders on homophobia.
“Lots of people say, ‘why don’t you adopt?’. You wouldn’t say that to a straight couple. You wouldn’t say: ‘Why do you deserve to have a biological kid?’” the British star said.
Offering an insight into family life for the trio, Tom revealed that the surrogate of their boy has become a huge part of their lives.
“She becomes such a massive part of your life for those nine months. Some don't want long-term relationships [with the parents]. We talk to ours all the time,” the athlete revealed.
The loving fathers are also keen to remain ignorant over the DNA status of their son – admitting they do not know which of them is the biological father.
“[O]ne thing we're very strongly leaning towards is that we don't want to know. He's ours,” Tom explained.
Tom and Lance frequently update fans on their parenting moments – with both posting photos and comments about their son via Instagram.

Tom even used the social media platform to announce the arrival of his son – who was born on 27 June.
Describing Roberts arrival as: “the most magical moment of my life,” Tom gushed: “The amount of love and joy you have brought into our life is immeasurable. Our precious son.”
