Ant McPartlin says biggest ever drink-driving fine of £86k ‘is what I deserve’ after car crash

He says: “They threw the book at me. But you know it’s kind of deserved, I needed to be punished.
“If you look at the ratio of what you get paid, they were right to fine me that much. It stung. It’s got to sting – you’ve done wrong and you’ve got to be punished.”
But Ant has still not been able to move on entirely.
He explains: “I’ll still carry guilt around. I apologised to the passengers in the other vehicles immediately after and I said it on the steps of the court because I’m genuinely sorry.
“Anybody who was in a right frame of mind wouldn’t have done that.
“But there’s no excuse for it. There’s no excuse for drink-driving. I make no excuses for it now.”
Ant told how he received no special treatment despite his national treasure status.
He says: “The emergency services were terrific. They did their job very well. They didn’t make any special circumstances for me, which I’m glad about.
“They also didn’t go too heavy because it was me either. It was just a bad, sad drink-driving case they were dealing with. They were very good at informing me how the other passengers’ injuries were.”
Ant had been trying to deal with his problems at the time, but it just wasn’t enough.
He says: “I was addressing it. I’d been to rehab. I was seeking help. I just hadn’t got there.
“I look back now and I’m not angry or bitter about it. There’s no ‘woe is me’ or ‘poor me’.
“I think I deserved to get arrested and fined because you shouldn’t do it."
Ant neither asked nor received any money for this interview.
