DOCTOR Who will return with a bang for a New Year’s special after being absent from our screens for over a year.

The Time Lord, played by Jodie Whittaker, will be back on New Year's Day. Here is everything you need to know about season 12.

When does Doctor Who season 12 air?

The BBC has announced that the sci-fi series will return New Year’s Day.

Following that the series will return to a weekly Sunday evening release date (as it did in 2018), meaning there’s only a few days between the first and second episodes, as episode two will be screened on January 5, 2020.

It’s also been confirmed that the first story (written by Chris Chibnall and titled Spyfall) will be a two-parter, so at least fans won’t have to wait too long to see what happens next.

The time of the show is yet to be released.

What will happen in Doctor Who season 12?

Doctor Who’s series 12 trailer has confirmed the terrifying return of Cybermen – and a dastardly World War II plot.

Jodie Whittaker will be making her second outing as the Time Lord and the trailer has given fans plenty of clues as to what they can expect.

The Doctor will come face to face with some of her old foes, including the Judoon and the Cyberman, with her ominously declaring: "Something is coming for me, I can feel it."

The trailer also sees a creature catch the Doctor off guard as it bursts through the doors of the TARDIS, as well the Doctor and her companions arriving in occupied Paris in 1943, right in the middle of World War II.

Who is in the cast of Doctor Who season 12?

Of course, the star of the show – Jodie – will be returning for another series as the famous Time Lord.

She told : "I really can’t wait to step back in and get to work again."

The mother-of-one will be joined by the cast of series 11, including Bradley Walsh as Graham, Tosin Cole portraying Ryan and Mandip Gill playing Yaz.

Jodie, 37, reprises her role as the 13th Time Lord in Doctor Who.

She first appeared in the 2017 Christmas special Twice Upon A Time when the doctor, previously played by Peter Capaldi, regenerated.

Jodie has starred as Beverly in the St Trinian's films and also appeared in cult sci-fi film Attack The Block and Broadchurch.

Bradley Walsh

Bradley, 59, will play the Doctor's travelling companion Graham.

He is best known for his roles as Danny Baldwin in Coronation Street and hosting the ITV gameshow The Chase.

Tosin Cole

Tosin, 27, takes on the role of another one of the Doctor's companions.

The actor is best known for his roles in The Cut, Hollyoaks and the Eastenders spin-off E20 in which he played Sol Levi.

Mandip Gill

Mandip, 31, completes the Tardis gang as the Doctor's third companion.

The actress has previously played Phoebe Jackson in Hollyoaks and has had roles in Casualty, Cuckoo and Good Karma Hospital.

What celebrity guest stars will there be on Doctor Who season 12?

A host of famous faces also set to make cameo appearances throughout the twelfth series.

Stephen Fry, Sir Lenny Henry, Robert Glenister, and Goran Višnjić are just some of the big names confirmed to guest-star.

More names are set to be confirmed.

Will Billie Piper and Alex Kingston return to Doctor Who?

Chris has hinted he would be open to seeing the return of some of the Doctor’s old foes back on the small screen.

Also, Jodie, who made her debut in series 11, has admitted she would love to see some familiar faces back on the show.

"I'd love to work with Billie Piper," she said. "Rose was a brilliant character. And River Song [played by Alex Kingston]!"

How did Doctor Who series 11 end?

Doctor Who series 11 finale had the catchy title 'The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos' and saw the Doctor and her companions answer 9 distress calls from the mysterious war-torn planet.

Fans were annoyed that the season finale brought back Tzim-Sha (aka Tim Shaw) who first appeared in the very first episode of the series and was behind the death of Graham's wife Grace.

Graham then vowed to avenge his late partner, leaving fans disappointed that the season finale had brought back the villain.
