What is the history of the festival?
The first New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival was held on April 22-26, 1970, by George Wein, a jazz pianist who also founded the Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island.
Wein organized the festival with the intention of putting a spotlight on Louisiana's culture. The first festival had a $3 admission fee and was attended by only 350 people, but by 2019, nearly 500k people attended over seven days.
At the time, Wein encountered numerous roadblocks due to Jim Crow Laws and initially determined the state wasn't ready for an integrated jazz festival.
When the Civil Rights Act was implemented in 1965, Wein revisited the idea of a jazz festival, but before the festival could be held, Black players from the American Football League experienced racial discrimination while in the city.

Once again, the festival was canceled. Wein encountered the same problem two years later and wrote in his book, Myself Among Others, that he had believed the third roadblock “... obviously obliterated any future I might have had as a festival producer in Louisiana."
But in February 1970, the idea of a jazz festival was once again revisited and Wein signed on to produce the event, resulting in what has become a 50-year legacy.
Wein was 95 years old when he passed away in September 2021 and had remained an ever-present fixture at the event prior to his death.
