Who was Steve Harwell?
Steven Scott Harwell was best known for his career as a rock musician.
Born on January 9, 1967, in Santa Clara, California, he first rose to fame in the early 1990s after forming the band Smash Mouth alongside Kevin Coleman, Greg Camp, and Paul De Lisle.
The band, which is still active to this day, is best known for the songs All Star and I'm a Believer, which were both featured in Shrek.
For several years, Harwell and De Lisle were the only two constant members of the band, however, that changed in 2021 when the late star retired.
What was his cause of death?
Harwell's death was first confirmed by his manager on September 4, 2023.
His manager told that he passed away "peacefully and comfortably" just days after he had entered hospice care.
The rockstar's death was reportedly a result of liver failure, according to his manager.
Harwell had a history of serious health complications including cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and Wernicke's encephalopathy, according to TMZ.

He was survived by his wife, Michelle Laroque, and preceded in death by his son, Presley Harwell, who died in July 2001, just seven months after being born.

When did Steve Harwell retire from Smashmouth?
Two years before Harwell's death, he appeared to be disoriented during a live performance with the band.
Shortly after, he told that he decided to retire to focus on his health.
"Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a Rockstar performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream," he told TMZ in a statement.
"To my bandmates, it’s been an honor performing with you all these years and I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with."
In addition to battling several medical conditions, Harwell also struggled with substance abuse.
