Tech a bow
POP star Will.i.am has been named Tech Personality of the Year at the Oscars of the gadget world.
Also winning big at the T3 Awards on Wednesday was a virtual reality headset from HTC — landing three gongs including top gadget.
The HTC Vive takes users to interactive 3D worlds just like the holodeck on Star Trek.
Samsung’s three awards included Phone of the Year for the Galaxy S7 Edge. It beat arch-rival Apple’s iPhone 6s. The new 7 was not out when awards were judged.
But in a one-off award voted for by T3 magazine readers to mark the tenth anniversary of the event, the iPhone won Gadget of the Decade.
There were 16 products that went head to head and were whittled down to the eventual winner. The three other semi-finalists were the iPad, PlayStation 3 and Netflix.
Will.i.am, star of The Black Eyed Peas and TV singing contest The Voice, became a winner after pioneering the next generation of voice control with the AneedA system, which is on his Dial smartwatch.
T3 editor Rob Carney says: “It’s incredible to look back over the past ten years of tech and see how it’s changed and influenced the world we live in.
“Apple’s iPhone is a more than worthy recipient of Gadget of the Decade.
“It paved the way for all modern smartphones.
“The past 12 months have not failed to amaze.
“VR has impacted in a big way, the connected home is becoming more commonplace and the strides technology is making have enabled 100 per cent battery-powered cars. It only brings excitement to what the next 12 months hold.”
