BRITAIN is never going to end up leaving the EU, a former Ukip leader predicted today.

Diane James said that the Government would deliver a "fudge" which would mean Brexit never actually takes place.

Mrs James, who quit Ukip soon after her short-lived period as leader last year, called on Leave supporters to band together.

She was appearing on BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House alongside Vince Cable, who is set to be the new leader of the Lib Dems.

Sir Vince has repeatedly said that he believes the result of the EU referendum will be reversed in a second referendum.

Asked if she thought Brexit would really happen, Mrs James replied: "No I don't, I don't think it will happen. If we look at what is happening at the moment, the Remain campaign has taken the initiative since the referendum.

"I fully believe there is going to be a fudge delivered further down the line that actually won’t be Brexit at all.

"And all the time that the Remain campaign takes the initiative, takes the lead and people become gradually disenfranchised, fed up with seeing all the negotiations aired on a daily basis in the press and the media, that will all deliver effectively a non-Brexit.

"And that's why the Leave campaign has to really galvanise its activity."

Theresa May has pledged to take Britain out of the European single market and customs union so we can end the migration free-for-all and strike foreign trade deals.

But her disastrous election performance has cast doubt on her ability to force her Brexit agenda through.

Pro-EU MPs have clubbed together in a bid to keep us in the single market.

But some Leave supporters argue that if we do sign up to European rules on our goods, it will be practically the same as staying in the EU altogether.

This weekend Tony Blair has been leading calls for Britain to remain in the EU despite last year's referendum - saying it is "absolutely necessary" for Brexit to be reversed.

Mrs James, an MEP for South East England, was elected Ukip leader in September last year after Nigel Farage resigned.

But she quit 18 days later and then left the party altogether.
