Can you call in sick with a hangover after World Cup games? UK employment laws on sick days explained

MANY folks in England will be nursing a sore head and heavy hearts after the Three Lions crashed out to Croatia last night.
But can you take the day off sick with a hangover because it was the World Cup?
Will you get the sack if you call in sick to work with a hangover after watching the World Cup?
If you are unfit for work because you are unwell then you can take a sick day.
Employees will only need a doctor’s note if you are off for seven days or more.
But if your employer knows you have a hangover, which was self-inflicted, and have not turned up to work, they are within their rights to tell you off.
If it fits in with a pattern of alcohol-related absenteeism then they could consider misconduct because you have an obligation to be fit to work.
Otherwise they have to give you sick pay.
Do employers try and get out of sick pay?
Unfortunately yes, and Citizens Advice warned some businesses are exploiting confusion around the issue to avoid paying employees.
It claims firms use tactics including cancelling shifts after staff have called in sick to appear as though they were not meant to be in that day.
Gillian Guy, chief executive of Citizens Advice told Sun Online: "Sick pay is a basic right which many workers are entitled to.
"Although some employers make genuine mistakes... others are trying to confuse people about their rights so they can get away with not paying up."

How can I cure a hangover?
Make sure you drink lots of water after you've been drinking and before you go to sleep.
Booze can make you expel up to four times as much water, so the best thing to do is to rehydrate.
Sleep, painkillers and herbal tea can all help too.
And getting some gentle exercise can boost endorphin levels, making you feel a whole load better about your sorry state.
