With Poland already out, Japan and Senegal finished on the same points, goal difference and goals scored and conceded.

Why Japan finished above Senegal in Group H?

JAPAN finished above Senegal via the Fair Play rule.

Under Fifa's new system, if teams were level via all other criteria and drew against each other, the side with less yellow cards go through.

Japan picked up FOUR bookings in their three games while Senegal wracked up SIX.

That has cost the Africans their place in the competition.

Who will they face next?

JAPAN will play Belgium in the quarter-finals TONIGHT - Monday 2 July.

The Red Devils won Group G by beating England 1-0 through a curling Adnan Januzaj strike.

The winner will face Brazil in the quarter-finals.
